comfort zone

I swore I wouldn't stress over Christmas this year. As always, I took the route of making gifts instead of spending money. This year was cookies. Batches of cookies that had to be boxed and mailed to other places. I made 2 batches each of Nestle tollhouse cookies, molasses crinkles with sugar icing, and cinnamon snickerdoodles (my personal favorite). Along with this endeavor, I had project deadlines, a nasty cold, a birthday, and a dear, wonderful friend visiting from Dallas for Christmas. So finally when it was all over, I drew this in a wonderfully mellow sense of satisfaction. I stressed, but not as much as Christmases past.
Happy Holidays to all!

Pop-Up Cookies

3D Pop-Up art, painted with gouache in a Moleskine sketchbook. The layers are Bristol Board glued to the page. I had a hankerin' to do another 3d piece, so cookies seemed appropriate for this time of year. No baking required.

dining out

When I walked past this window early last Sunday morning, I knew I had to draw this scene. I had my camera, so I walked up to the window and pointed the camera here and there, casually snapping photos of this and that. I thought it would be really odd to have a total stranger taking pictures of you while eating your breakfast. It would have been out of the question to sit there enjoying your meal while a stranger stares at you while doing something with a little black book and a pencil. Anyway, I got the shot and did the drawing without any excessive drama.

morning coffee

While taking pictures for this sketch, the waitress kept glancing at me with a very annoyed expression. At first I couldn't figure out why, then I realized she thought I was taking pictures of her. She finally ignored me, probably thought I was some wierdo with an obsession for salt and pepper shakers.
