loads of snow and lots of ice

It's the beginning of March.  Still, there is snow piled on top of snow.  Hard-packed layers that will take much time and plenty of warm weather to melt.
Deep snow.  I love the marshmallow shapes  created both by wind and snow plows.
The temperatures alternate between above and below the freezing mark.  Some of the snow has melted, but colder weather comes back.  Now there are big patches of slippery, shiny ice.  Battles which will inevitably lead to the death of winter into new energy and growth from the strength and warmth of the sun.

I love the energies of nature.   I rarely venture out without my camera.  It's an obsession of many years.  I must have a gazillion photos that no one ever seen.  Photography is the anatomy of composition that expresses the beauty of this world.

a dream of springtime

Yesterday on Cape Cod came several more inches of snow.  Last night I dreamt of bright green springtime amongst patches of heavy winter snow.  Two distinct seasons of the year in one landscape.

road trip part 1

I just had to illustrate the roadtrip from Wimberley Texas to Peabody, Massachusetts.

Aside from a white-out blizzard in the mountains of West Virginia, the weather was great and the adventure was really enjoyable and safe. Cheers to my new life in New England!

World's Largest Rocker

The Great Migration from Texas to Massachusetts is underway! A good friend, a 16' rented Penske truck, and all of my belongings are making our way northeastward.

This gigantic rocking chair is along Route '66 in Cuba, Missouri. Certainly a sight worth seeing, with a fabulous giftshop as well.

More roadtrippin' drawings to come.

electric chickens

After 6 weeks in New England, I'm back in Texas. I have 2 weeks to pack up, and then move to New England. I've always wanted to live there, and now it's happening! Yikes!

I'm excited but will really miss Wimbereley. Such a great little community of creative, eclectic hippies, with the mixture of wealthy, retiring Republicans from Houston and Dallas. I wish the best of good energies to Wimberley for preserving it's charm and beauty. And thank you for the past eight years of inspiration.

sunrise thunderstorm

When the storm rolled in at sunrise, the sky glowed like a fresh bruise. Yellow and orange, deep green and blue. It ominously foreshadowed what came next...lightning and booming thunder all around. The bolts were searing white with electric blue edges. I sat on the porch and sketched this after the power went out. This happens often during storms. Who needs electronic technology when there's Nature's light show?

the neighbors

We have a huge deer population in the Hill Country. For several years I've been feeding and befriending a family. This mother and her yearling come by every day for handouts of carrots, apples, and corn tortillas. She comes up to my porch and peers in the window until I bring food. They are highly entertaining and often downright funny. This deer is pregnant, so it will be interesting to see how she reacts to her ever-present yearling when the fawns arrive. I don't get close enough to touch them, nor do I give them names. But I do love observing them from a few feet away.

blooming aloe vera and zebra succulent

I sketched this a couple weeks ago. Now, the bloom stalks are about 2 feet tall. I have quite a collection of succulents and cacti, many of them are blooming now.

Concord, Massachusetts

The Old Manse house is next to the battle field of the first Revolutionary War encounter in Concord, Massachusetts. This was also a meeting place for Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne and Henry David Thoreau.

low water crossing

A quick location sketch of a low water crossing in the neighborhood of Woodcreek. Cypress Creek is spring-fed from the local aquifers, and when it rains this one lane road is underwater. There are quite a few of these low water crossings. It's a gamble taking an old ranch road and discovering 15 miles later that it's closed. You have to turn around, go back and take an alternate route to the original destination. This happened to me recently. But, after last summer's drought, I am not complaining one bit.

crepe myrtle bouquet

This is the first and only oil painting I've done. I think I was 17 years old.

giant wooly moth

I think this moth had just come into the world. The wings are very short, so this is the only explanation I can come up with.

purple thistle

One of my favorite wildflowers. Reminds me of the Dr. Suess story, "Horton Hears a Who".

garden art

A glass gazing ball. Inside are marbles for weight to keep the gazing ball from flying away in strong winds (which is often).
