pasture grasses

I went for a walk in the woods with the intention of sketching. For the first time I noticed the wonderful design of these curly bladed grasses. They were too interesting to pass up. I should remember to look at them again in the summer when they are green and alive.

Susan your work is absolutely amazing. I love your blog and look at it every day. Do you draw in pencil first or go straight for the pens?

Thank you, Drawn in Chalk. I usually start with a pencil sketch, then work with ink later. I love the challenge of taking what looks like random disorder in nature and showing the real harmony that lies within the chaos. These grasses are a perfect example. When I sat down to observe them, I noticed their wonderful shapes, patterns and interactions with each other. With careful ink work, I try to accentuate this harmony.

Another perfect bit of art! If I tried something like this, it would become cluttered. You have a wonderful way of making magic with your pens! Happy New Year!
